With security certification, clients and partners alike can see that your business is suitably protected from unwanted attention from hackers.

is it complicated?

It is relatively straightforward but does require certain technical adjustments that might need to be implemented by an IT support provider.

what is cyber essentials?

Cyber Essentials is a scheme created by the UK Government in June 2014 with the primary aim of encouraging businesses of all sizes to review their IT security and adopt best practices quickly and cost-effectively.

why is cyber essentials important?

Essentially, it’s a box-ticking exercise, but by ticking the boxes, you are ensuring your organisation has the most fundamental IT security controls in place. It’s the very basic elements of security that are often neglected, and most regularly taken advantage of if left alone.

Cyber Essentials is also necessary in securing government contracts, and it is popular amongst business clients and partners as it demonstrates a basic level of security when handling data.

who needs cyber essentials?

Even if you do maintain an internal IT team, certifying with Cyber Essentials proves to your customers, partners and suppliers that you have top-notch cyber security. It’s a nationally recognised standard for best practice and shows the world you take this seriously.

Cyber Essentials was designed with small businesses in mind; due to the fact they don’t have the same budgets as large organisations. Certification demonstrates security while dealing with the most common security issues.

Even if you haven’t suffered a cyber attack, it is still important to get Cyber Essentials. You could go for years without a break-in at home, even if you left your house unlocked, but it’s not something you’d do!

how do I get certified?

Cyber Essentials is issued through IASME – there is more information about how it works on their website: https://iasme.co.uk/

In order to get certified you need to have various things in place, like multi-factor authentication, firewalls, up-to-date operating systems and backups across the company.

Once you have everything in place, you book a self-assessment, complete the questionnaire, have your answers verified and you’re done!
