What is Microsoft Copilot?

16/10/25

Microsoft 365 Copilot serves as a valuable AI tool, crafted to simplify your daily tasks and allowing you more time to focus on more important jobs.

You’ve probably heard of Microsoft Copilot; it’s the AI assistant that’s making inboxes lighter and presentations prettier. But have you actually tried it yet? If not, you’re missing out on a digital companion that can help you wrangle your workday – from summarising endless email chains to editing Word documents and even writing blogs (wink).

Let’s take a closer look at how Copilot works and what it can do to make your nine-to-five feel a bit smoother.

So, what is Microsoft Copilot?

Think of Copilot as that super-organised colleague who never forgets a deadline and always has the right words ready to go. Built on OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology – the same clever stuff behind Bing Chat – it can handle everything from drafting proposals to summarising meetings and designing PowerPoint slides.

In short: it’s here to take on the admin so you can focus on the actual thinking.

Copilot lives inside your favourite Microsoft 365 apps, so there’s no need to learn yet another platform. You simply type what you need, and it gets to work. Need to polish an email? Analyse a spreadsheet? Find the key takeaways from a meeting you half-listened to? Copilot’s on it. Sadly, it still can’t make you a cup of tea (although it probably has some hot tips on how to make a good one).

Which apps does Microsoft Copilot support?

Copilot is woven through the Microsoft 365 suite – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams – so wherever you already work, it’s quietly there in the background, ready to lend a hand.

Outlook

Ever spent ages rewriting an email to sound “professional but friendly”? Copilot can help with that. It suggests subject lines, tweaks tone, checks politeness levels and generally makes you look like the best version of your emailing self. You’ll wonder how you ever managed without it.

Teams

With more than 300 million people using Teams, there’s a lot of chat to keep up with. Copilot acts as your personal notetaker in meetings, summarising discussions, highlighting action points, and helping you catch up if you were double-booked. It’s like having a PA who never zones out during long calls.

Word

Writer’s block? Gone. Copilot can create a first draft, rewrite clunky sections, or check whether your report actually includes a call to action. It’ll even reference other documents you’ve written, so your tone stays consistent across projects.

PowerPoint

Turning a document into a presentation used to take hours. Now, you can hand it to Copilot and watch it spin your words into themed slides, layouts and visuals in minutes. It’s not just fast, it’s surprisingly tasteful. And if you’re the one reviewing a colleague’s deck, Copilot can summarise the key points for you.

Excel

For the spreadsheet sceptics among us, this is where Copilot really shines. It can analyse data, highlight trends, and even forecast future outcomes. It turns numbers into narratives, and that’s worth a lot on a busy Monday morning.

What's new with Microsoft Copilot?

Microsoft hasn’t stopped at the basics. Two new AI agents, Researcher and Analyst, are expanding what Copilot can do.

Researcher pulls together information from your emails, files and even the web to help you build reports or strategies.

And Analyst dives into your spreadsheets, visualising data and running Python-powered insights.

There’s also Copilot Studio, which lets you build custom AI agents for your own business - no coding needed. Whether you’re connecting it to Salesforce, Google Drive or Gmail, Copilot now feels less like an add-on and more like the hub of your digital workspace.

How much does Microsoft Copilot cost?

For businesses, Copilot is bundled with Microsoft 365 and ranges between £28.90 to £41.70 per month. Whereas individuals can get access for £5.80 per month.

Is it worth it?

If your workday often feels like a never-ending admin loop, then yes, Copilot is worth it. It won’t replace your skills or your voice, but it will smooth out the bits that slow you down. It’s the kind of tool that quietly becomes indispensable, a bit like spellcheck or coffee.

How can Resolve help?

We have been using Copilot for a while now – it even gave us a little assistance when editing this blog!

Before launching Copilot into your business, there are various security considerations, like whether Bob would find a full list of salaries if he typed in "tell me how much everyone earns." Organising file systems and permissions properly is super important and we can help you out.
