As we are soon to be moving office ourselves, and of course we work in IT, we thought we would share our knowledge on the most important considerations to take into account from an IT perspective when relocating offices.

Office IT

Often the most stressful thing about an office move is getting IT systems back up and running once you are all moved in.  Generally IT is the life blood of most companies, and if the IT isn’t working right, then frankly a lot of things won’t be, making you to unable to continue operating business as usual. Resolve’s Commercial Director Jude highlights the most important IT issues to factor in when moving office...

IT Infrastructure

Shifting an IT infrastructure from one location to another is always tricky, regardless of the fact that an office move also requires the movement of staff, bulky office furniture and the management of customer expectations. At Resolve we have managed a huge amount of office moves - including a few of our own - so we have a good idea of the sort of IT issues you'll stumble upon.

So, if you are moving premises shortly, these are the six most important things you need to think about...

1. Inform your Internet Provider

Most good providers (including Resolve) will allow you to take your connection with you, providing the service is available at the new site. If you can’t take it with you, you’ll need to cancel your current contract and source a new one for the new offices.

2. Adjust your router

Bringing your router and simply plugging it back in often isn’t enough. A new physical address usually dictates a new internet address, so the router will need adjusting accordingly.

3. Server move

The Server move is often the easiest bit, but it’s really important to make sure you have adequate power outlets and space to house the Server in the new offices.

4. DNS

DNS, or Domain Name System is often overlooked, but it is absolutely vital to make sure this is moved along with everything else. Your DNS records tell the world where your website is and where your email should go.

5. Phone systems

Along with all of the above, it’s crucial to work with both your IT provider and phone provider to ensure your phone system will work at the new site, with the new connectivity.

6. Bring your computers

Finally, bringing along your computers and installing them appropriately might seem like a no-brainer, but proper network point placement and desk layout can often be over overlooked.

We hope these quick six IT considerations are useful.  If you'd like a helping hand on moving your IT equipment to a new workspace, we’d be more than happy to work with you on this kind of project. We can take care of all of this for you and make the move just that little bit less stressful!
