Using Exchange Mail on your Android device

Using Exchange Mail on your Android device
A step by step guide to adding Exchange Mail on your Android phone or tablet.

Android is now the world's most popular mobile phone platform, with over 70% of market share towards the end of 2012.

So, if you're one of the millions of Android users worldwide, you might want access to your emails on your phone or tablet. This guide will take you step by step through the process of adding your Microsoft Exchange account to your Android device.

What information will you need?

  • Your Exchange server address e.g. exchange.myserver.com. Speak to your system administrator if you are not sure what this is
  • The username and password for your account
  • The domain name for this email address (eg @myserver.com)

The process is quite simple provided you have all the above information. Start by connecting your device to the internet. The best option is Wi-Fi rather than mobile data, but if you are on a data plan confirm your data allowance is sufficient so you won't be charged any additional fees.

Step 1:

Accounts Screen

Open up the Mail app. If you already have an account set up select ‘add account’ from the menu (if not you will see this screen already)

Once on this Screen select Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync

Step 2:

DetailsAdditional Settings

Enter your details.

In some cases you might not need to enter any more details, as the server will Do the work for you.

Click next.

Step 3:

If everything has gone well, you will see this screen. Here you can configure what data you want to be synced to your device. You can sync your email, contacts and calendars, but not tasks.

You can also change the update schedule. There are four options here, with details of each plan underneath. Choose one that best suits your needs, bearing in mind the affect they will have on data usage and battery life then click next.

Step 4:

Sync Settings

Once your account is synced there are a couple of other options and settings worth mentioning:

Head to Menu>Settings And choose Sync, Send & Receive.

Schedule

Here you can adjust the times you want your phone to sync, e.g. the working day. You can also adjust the number of days mail you want to sync, if you will be mainly using your data plan for your mail It will be worth changing this option to a few days, that way you won't end up synchronising your entire mailbox on your data plan.
