Transfering Music to iPhone Without iTunes

Transfering Music to iPhone Without iTunes
iTunes isn't for everyone. But it is pretty integral to the use of an iPhone. Mike has come up with a handy alternative, in the form of CopyTrans Tools.

It has been a long time since I plugged my iPhone into my computer. It always backs up remotely to iCloud and I use Spotify 98% of the time when listening to music. However, the other day I bought a new record on the latest up and coming format, vinyl! It came with a download code, so I decided to add the download to my phone to allow me to listen in the car. It was at this point I realised my current phone had never been plugged into my computer, it had been setup from an iCloud backup. This meant the only way I could get my newly downloaded album onto my phone was if I registered the phone as new in iTunes, after which I could sit back and watch it wipe all my data and Apps. As you can imagine, I wasn’t too happy about this option!

So I had a search around to see if there was any other way I could get the tracks onto my phone. That’s when I came across CopyTrans Tools and in particular the free CopyTrans Manager. This is a wonderful tool that allows you to add music, videos, audiobooks, podcasts etc. to your iPhone without having to go through iTunes. You can also edit ID3 data, artwork and manage playlists. Once installed it’s very easy and quick to use. It also allows you to play the music from your phone on your computer, which is perfect for work.

Download and Launch

You can download the manager from here: http://www.copytrans.net/download/
Hovering over the Downloads button gives you the option to download the installer or the Zip. If you go for the Zip it will take you to download.cnet.com where you can download CopyTrans Manager directly. However, I would recommend using the installer link which downloads the control centre.

Once installed it allows you to install and open all of the CopyTrans tools, some of them are free but if you want to try any of the ones that aren’t, they will install on a limited activation basis before you need to pay. After an app has been installed the Control Centre will move it to the top of the list. Moving the mouse over an installed app will bring up a start button.

Connecting and using

The first thing you need to do once you start CopyTrans Manager is to connect your device.

This is fairly straight forward if you have iTunes already installed. However, if you don’t you will see this warning.

I recommend clicking on 'Install only Drivers' which takes you to the CopyTrans Drivers Installer page. Click on 'Download CopyTrans Drivers Installer' (This will redirect you to download.cnet.com) and follow the instructions. I would recommend the Automatic Install. Once the drivers have been installed, or if you already had iTunes installed, the first time you connect your device you will be asked to unlock it.

Follow the instructions, the window will go away and CopyTrans Manager will read the iTunes folder on your device. You will then see all the music, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, etc. on your device listed in the manager screen. Adding, editing and deleting is very straight forward. However, if you do need any help WindSolutions have provided a lot of really good help files and YouTube videos. These can be accessed from the start up splash screen or the menu list at the top right of the main screen.

My verdict

All in all I have been very impressed with CopyTrans Manager. The screen layout is uncluttered and easy to navigate at a glance. Adding music from a single track to a whole folder of data is simple and quick, as is editing track data and artwork. It also uses far less of your computer’s resources than iTunes and doesn’t slow it down when booting. So if like me, you backup your iOS device via iCloud and only ever use iTunes to add music or videos, I would highly recommend using CopyTrans Manager as an excellent alternative to iTunes.
