Migrate PC to MAC

Migrate PC to MAC
A quick and easy guide to migrating your Windows PC to MAC OSx

Migrate PC to MAC

With the release of Microsoft's new operating system "Windows 8", some people are considering whether to stay with Windows or make the move over to Mac rather than upgrading.

But how do you take such a leap? Well rest assured it's actually easier than you might think, more like a little hop.

The two latest versions of OS X, Lion and Mountain Lion, both include a utility called the 'Migration Assistant' which provides an automated way to migrate your files from a Windows PC.

What data is migrated by Migration Assistant?

  • User Account
  • Files (documents, photos and videos)
  • Email
  • Contacts
  • Calendars
  • ITunes
  • Browser Settings for Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox

Apple's Migration Assistant is capable of transferring data from a number of Windows mail applications including Microsoft Outlook (2003, 2007 and 2010 32-bit versions), Outlook Express, Windows Mail and Windows Mail Live Mail.

If you have iTunes for Windows installed then your iTunes library including music, photos, videos, apps and games for iOS devices, will be copied over.

What data is NOT migrated by Migration Assistant?

  • Windows Applications
  • User Account Passwords

No Windows applications are copied over because Mac cannot run Windows software and for that reason you might not be able to open some files created by missing Windows applications.  For example you will need to install Microsoft Word for Mac (or an alternative word processing application for Mac) to enable you to open all those lovely Word documents you have just moved.

How to Transfer

The easiest method to perform this task is by connecting your new Mac and PC to the same home/office network and running the Migration Assistant Wizard on the Mac and the Windows Migration Assistant on your PC (this is a free program written by Apple).

Windows Migration Assistant v1.0.1 can be downloaded here:

To make the transfer more seamless it is advisable that you disable Windows Updates on your PC and ensure both machines are connected to the internet.

Simply download and run the Windows Migration Assistant on your PC, where it will wait for a response from the Migration Assistant on the Mac.

Running the Migration Assistant on the Mac will present you with clear step by step instructions that will guide you through the process and it's from here that you'll be able to confirm exactly what folders and data you want to migrate.

Once you have selected the options the length of time that it takes will depend on the number and size of the files being migrated, and the speed of the network.

That's really all there is to it!
