There is a chance you have seen the "Major flaw in millions of Intel chips revealed" news story that has been hitting the headlines in the last couple of days. If you're not sure what I mean, see the BBC:


Various bits of information have been flying around about this. Apparently, macOS might already have a fix ( Microsoft has said things like: "We have not received any information to indicate that these vulnerabilities had been used to attack our customers”. And Intel has also noted that the released software updates (and any future firmware updates) may cause some systems to run slower. Right, so, lots of information.


Here are the six things you really need to know, courtesy of our Technical Director....

1. This is a potential security flaw, there are no known incidents for this flaw being exploited by any malware at this stage.

2. Windows 10 machines will automatically be protected.

3. Windows 7 and 8 machines will be protected when the patch is released next week – users should make sure that their machines are updated.

4. Servers will be protected as long as they are up to date with Windows Updates.

5. Macs with High Sierra OS X and are up to date are protected. Apple have not said if they are providing a patch for older operating systems.

6. Azure systems will be automatically protected in the coming days if they have not already been updated.
